Welcome to the video series that’s all about climbing the ladder of vibration and manifesting the life of your dreams. I’m Stephanie Mulac, and today we’re going to be talking about the difference between reliving your past and learning from your past.
Now this is something that a lot of people really struggle with, because there’s so many people that will tell you, “Don’t be affected by your past. Don’t let the past keep you from prospering or succeeding in the future. Leave the past in the past.” But at the same time many of those same people will also say to you, “The past has shaped you. The past has caused you to be what it is that you are today. It’s created the strength that you have to go on and to tackle new challenges.”
The question quickly becomes, do we forget about the past or do we take the past and utilize it to help us for the future? And it can be a confusing situation because it’s oftentimes not clear exactly what it is, we’re leaving behind and what it is we’re taking with us and moving into the future.
Now my litmus test for this is to ask yourself the question: Is your interpretation of the past helping you to take action or is it keeping you from taking action? And therein lies the solution to whether or not you’re living in the past or you’re allowing the past to shape you and propel you forward into the future.
For example, let’s say that every time in the past that you’ve ever dieted and failed, you adopt the attitude that you are never going to be able to lose weight. That would be inaction that would be looking at the past and things that did not go right in the past or things that affected you adversely in the past and carrying them into the future with a negative connotation and keeping you from taking new action and looking for new ways to accomplish something.
Now if you switch that around and you say, “Okay, well, perhaps what I’ve done in the past has failed, but here’s what I’ve learned from those failures or those situations where I didn’t achieve the success that I was looking at, and I’ve learned about the things that I struggle with, and I learned about the things that don’t really suit me in terms of a particular plan or a program.”
Taking that knowledge and going forward taking action into the future, you then can construct something based on your knowledge of the past and construct it in such a way that you utilize it to tap into the strengths and tap into the things that you are good at. Create a plan that is going to be more successful the next time around. But it’s creating that plan and utilizing the knowledge and utilizing what you’ve learned in the past. Learning from it but not taking it forward into the future by way of saying, “Oh, that’s not going to work so, I’m not even going to try.”
Let’s take another example. Let’s say that you are passed over for a promotion at work and that was after putting in all kind of hard work and trying to do all of the extra overtime and bonuses and things like that and the job promotion went to someone else. If you let that past condition you to believe that you weren’t meant for a promotion, you weren’t meant to move up the ladder, you weren’t meant to succeed or go into another higher paying position, to get a raise or to get more opportunity or more responsibility, and you let that past situation cause you not to try for the next opening, not to try for the next opportunity to apply for a position that you want to move up in the company, then you’re letting the past influence you by inaction.
But if you look at it from the opposite perspective and you take a look at what it is that you did, what the positive things were and where the shortcomings were and what you could have done different. Then learning from your past and moving forward is going to give you an opportunity to be even better when you apply for that next job, that next raise, the opportunity to accelerate whatever it is that you’re doing and reach the life of your dreams.
You see, there’s a slight difference between living in the past and letting the past affect you from taking action in the future. Allowing what you’ve learned in the past to create a better you and give you an opportunity to move forward faster and bigger and better than ever.
